2020: Adios Resolutions, Good Vibes Only in the New Year

1

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, I find myself looking for ways to start anew in 2020.  2019 was…well, it was a doozy. There were lots of ups and downs and little moments in between.  And while I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the good memories, I am so ready for a new year and new outlook for my journey ahead.  So in an effort to jump-start my plan for good vibes and one heck of a 2020, I’m recommending five steps I plan to take to start the year on the right foot.

Step one: Cleanse

If you are like me, the last two weeks (I’m lying… it’s more like two months) have been full of unhealthy decisions. I am quite sure my diet consisted of Christmas cookies and wine the entire month of December. So, for starters, why not begin 2020 with a cleanse. It sounds contrite to think about starting a diet in the new year, but not only should we rid our bodies from alcohol and those dang sugar cookies, consider a social media cleanse as well. Like food and drink, social media can be toxic to our well-being as well. So, a nice long break from these will definitely improve mind, body, and soul going into 2020.

Step two: Organize and declutter

Less is more in 2020. I am a type-A personality, so organizing is my jam. But that’s just half the battle. Channel your inner Marie Kondo this coming new year and try to simplify life. For us, going through closets, toys, cabinets, and the dreaded junk drawer are all on the docket. Decluttering your house is important, but so is decluttering your personal life. Take a close look at your relationships, job, and extracurricular activities as well. Don’t be afraid to say no and put your time into those things that make you happiest.

Step three: Set goals

Every new year we set new year’s resolutions, and often times these go unachieved. This January, instead of a resolution set little goals that are attainable for each facet of your life. For me, I want to bring in several new clients, I want to volunteer at the Humane Society at least once a month, and I want to be among the top three read posts one month on the Indianapolis Mom’s blog. I know it would be easy to say, I want to be a better wife, mom, and friend (which isn’t untrue). But ultimately, I think by accomplishing my little goals, I will be well on my way to achieving those larger goals as well.

Step four: Create a vision board

I recently started seeing a holistic specialist. In her office is a small poster board with cut out magazine clippings glued to it. I haven’t seen a vision board in ages, but I often think about our sessions, and the board is the one thing that stands out the most. Think about the goals you’ve set, what matters most in your life, and where you see yourself this time next year and put it on your own board. I stare at my specialist’s vision board during each session and find myself reaching for some of her goals most similar to my own. It may sound old school, but it works, and it’s incredible what you can do with a glue stick and a poster board.

Step five: Believe

As I said before, 2019 threw me some whammies. I am so blessed and lucky to have loving family and friends, a good job, and a roof over my head. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have some rocky days too.  Somewhere during those harder times this year, I lost some of my desire to believe, to believe in myself and believe in my ability to reach my goals. This year it is time to restore both. In 2020 throw negative attitudes out the window and start living the mantra, “believe it, achieve it.” Look, I’m not saying its foolproof, but I think a little self-belief goes a long way.  2020 is going to my year, and I know with a bit of belief in yourself, and what’s next, it can be yours too.
