To this day, my mind is still excitedly blown about all the fun “National Days” that exist…National Best Friends Day, National Taco Day, National Lost Sock Memorial Day, International Talk Like a Pirate Day…the list seems endless, and you can really find anything from the normal (National Grandparents Day) to the nutty (Squirrel Appreciation Day) to the extraordinary (National Nothing Day…a day to do nothing…aaahhh) in terms of what can be celebrated throughout the year.
October is no stranger to having an array of fun National Days; the spooky month is usually synonymous with milder weather, pumpkin patches, pumpkin spice candles and lattes (pumpkin everything, really!), falling leaves, and of course, Halloween. Yet there is so much more in between, and in particular, midway through the month on the 14th, such as National Fossil Day, National Emergency Nurses Day, World Standards Day and National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day. Let’s take a look at the other National Days being celebrated on October 14th!
National Dessert Day
Dessert lovers, look no further for a reason to indulge in your favorite sweet treat on this unique date. This particular day pays homage to sugar, of course, and the delectable dessert course that follows after the main meal in almost every food culture, whether it’s cake, pie, ice cream, Tiramisu, Baklava, Flan and much more! More than one person out there, including my grandfather, said, “You’ll always have room for your dessert if you eat it first.” Perhaps on this date you will get a free pass for that? Lol
National Curves Day
Let’s give a big round of applause for a day to celebrate body positivity and frames of all body types! This day aims to boost confidence for all sizes as well as advocate for trendy, viable fashion for all. The important traits of self-love and self-confidence are embodied on National Curves Day. Curvy, cute and confident…oh yeah, that’s right!
National Stop Bullying Day
This important day drives unity and increased awareness about the need to prevent bullying, encouraging parents, educators, schools, and organizations to work together to identify bullying situations and maintain effective strategies to promote peace and respect vs. acts of abuse and unfair treatment. Putting a stop to bullying and being on high alert to intervene when bullying occurs is a topic that will never get old and will never stop being pursued as a worthy cause.
National Pet Obesity Awareness Day
Just like humans, pets need proper nutrition and exercise, too! According to a study conducted by the World Pet Obesity Association (WPOA), 59 percent of evaluated dogs were overweight or obese, and 61 percent of evaluated cats were overweight or obese. Millions of pets in the U.S. carry extra weight, potentially lowering their lifespan and creating health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. This National Pet Obesity Awareness Day encourages pet owners to truly evaluate their pet’s health, diet, and physical activity levels and make any necessary adjustments so their fur babies can truly be healthier and live longer lives.
National Be Bald and Be Free Day
Whether it’s a personal choice or due to a medical condition such as cancer or alopecia, having a bare scalp is celebrated on this day due to its boldness, confidence, and low-maintenance look. On this day, they ask you to post selfies with the hashtag #BeBaldAndBeFreeDay if you are rocking the bald look, or to consider donating to a charity or cancer center.
National I Love You Day
Just four months before Valentine’s Day, National I Love You Day is always on October 14th each year and serves as a great reminder to tell the special people in your life what they mean to you. Maybe you can write a thoughtful note, buy a fun treat, or create a touching gift; this day sparks fondness and gives you a chance to share your love and appreciation with the people you value most.
