Many will say that vacationing with children is just parenting in another city. And while I may agree with this sentiment, I may have just unlocked the perfect vacation for parents. My recommendation? Cruising with kids – a family cruise for everyone.
Before you let out a sigh, let me explain. For the past two years, my husband and I have been exhausted from finding a family vacation that combines pools, plenty of sun, delicious food, and beautiful beaches. And whenever we thought we had figured it out, it became more expensive. A few years ago, we had enjoyed a cruise together, without children. So we after some planning, we decided to take a family cruise for Spring Break. And that is how we unlocked the secret to peacefully vacationing with our children.
A lot can be said about cruises. There are a lot of people, plenty of buffets, small dwellings, brief time on the islands, and of course motion sickness. But there also is the constant entertainment, water slides, the ability to see one or more islands, and the ability to experience things you wouldn’t have otherwise. Our family believes in experiences as opposed to gifts because tangible things go away, but they remember experiences forever. And while there was no guarantee that they would love cruising, the experience is what makes us closer.
With summer vacations right around the corner, I want to give you the best advice (based on experience) for successfully cruising with children and planning your next family cruise.
Make a Plan
Start planning early. We begin planning (and paying) for our cruise at least six months in advance. Think of your plane tickets and any reservations for things to do on the ship. It also gives you an opportunity to choose your room. Pro tip: I recommend flying in on the day before your cruise. While it is an extra expense, remember that ships do not wait. This will provide you with peace of mind.
Research Cruise Lines
The most popular cruise lines for families are Carnival, Disney, and Royal Caribbean. They all have about the same amenities but come at different price points. Do your research and make sure you take note of what is important for you and your family for your trip.
Do NOT Overpack
I noticed that on our first cruise, I packed all the things and we never wore them. Honestly, we spent much of the day in swimwear. Ensuring that you have toiletries, sunscreen, shoes, and clothing for theme nights is necessary. However, this is not the kind of trip where a ton of outfits are necessary. Which, if you overpack like me, this is a relief!
Utilize Camps and Clubs on the Ship
There are kid camps and clubs on most of the cruises so that you can do adult activities. And I promise you, kids love these! They get to spend time with other kids and you get a bit of a break while on board to enjoy the adult-only areas or even some peace and quiet. While they play games and spend time with other children, you can nap or enjoy ocean views.
You Don’t Have to Do It All
There is SO much to do on board, but you do not have to do it all. Remember that you are on vacation, so do what YOU want to do on your family cruise. I personally spent the majority of my time on the balcony just listening to the waves. Consider just exploring the islands or countries on the various port days. Even if you do not do an excursion, immerse yourself in the culture.
Take Lots of Pictures
Don’t forget to call your cell phone provider and get the rates for a cruise package so that you can take pictures and use data while you are out of the country. It is always fun to see how my children grow up each time we cruise. I am so grateful for the number of pictures that we must use to commemorate the experiences. So take all the pictures!
