I’ve played around with a center part here or there (I spent too much time admiring Lorde’s curly hair in 2013 to ever fully leave the side part behind, don’t worry).
I even tried to update my socks. Apparently wearing no-show socks is a surefire way to tell someone you’re a millennial and no longer hip, but I don’t understand that after a lifetime of flipping my tall socks down so you can’t even tell I’m wearing socks – why are we showing off our socks now?!
I still can get away with wearing leggings under dresses because I teach preschool and am up and down off the floor all day. Leggings under comfy dresses is really an early childhood educator’s dream outfit.
I tried so hard to loosen up my pants wardrobe and ditch the skinny jeans. I have a few pairs still hanging on in my closet. I still need them in the winter to go with my Uggs.
Apparently, it is uncool and very millennial to use “lol” after every text message (I need to assure you I am not mad at you) and to use the crying-laughing emoji. Can I substitute the upside-down smiley instead?
I still own a few statement necklaces, not because I still wear them (often) but because they look pretty hanging up on my jewelry stand. Also because if I am going to save one millennial accessory trend, I will still die for a chunky black headband.
But I refuse – I mean, refuse – to let go of my crossbody bags. Apparently this is a huge indicator that you are an old and outdated millennial. But if my crossbody purse makes me look old, I’m going to just let it be.
Crossbody bags first started becoming a huge trend when I was in college. They were perfect for hitting the bars, providing a safe place for your apartment key, phone, oversized wallet, and digital camera all in one place. You never had to search for it. It stayed on your body from the second you left to the second you walked back into your apartment. It solved all the problems of the bag that was cool before that – the clutch!
I am starting to believe the people who say crossbody bags are over are just purse-stealers acting as Gen Zers.
I am proud to be a millennial, and let’s face it, I am not getting any younger – and my fashion choices probably aren’t either. I’ll probably keep rewatching Girls season 1, admiring all of the outfits from 2012 too. And I will definitely keep my purse across my body.
