My Love of Skinny Jeans

I was recently at a birthday party and one of the other moms there mentioned that she was getting rid of her skinny jeans and would replace them with wide leg jeans, because that is what is now in style. She had had a conversation with someone from a younger generation and they told her that skinny jeans were no more. Now she was replacing her entire jean wardrobe.

I get it. We all want to be seen as hip, cool, or fun. No one wants to look like a grandma. While I don’t want to look like a granny, I also don’t want to look like a 20-year-old. While 20-year-old me was much smaller, and her metabolism was working in her favor, she also had some insecurities, didn’t know what she wanted to do with life, was a broke college student, and still had some growing to do. I’m proud of the growth that I’ve had since I was 20 and I can look fondly back at my 20-year-old antics, but I for sure do not want to go back.

I recently saw a millennial influencer on Instagram who gave advice on how to upgrade your look to look trendy or younger. The “not look” was a pair of skinny jeans and a cute. The “trendy look” was a pair of wide-legged jeans and a mid-drift top. In my opinion, the first look or the “not look” looked better of the two options. The comment section agreed with me. The original look fit her body better, and she looked happier. The influencer responded to a few of the comments that the second look was what was currently in style. While it may have been more in-style, I wish she had used it as an opportunity to explain that she liked what she was wearing. She liked how it fit, it was more comfortable, it was anything other than “its in-style”.

With that said, millennial moms, are we ok? Why are we taking fashion advice from the kids we used to babysit? If you like the new trend of wide-leg jeans, go for it! Do whatever makes you happy and brings you joy. Life is way too short to spend it in clothes you don’t feel comfortable in. With that said, if you want to wear your skinny jeans, WEAR YOUR SKINNY JEANS. And please do not throw them away. They will absolutely return to being in style.

Ultimately, who cares what’s in style? One of the benefits of getting older is caring less about others’ perceptions of you. If I want to wear a cute top and skinny jeans, I’m going to wear my cute top and skinny jeans. If I want to wear wide-leg jeans and a mid-drift, I’ll wear that too. At almost 38 years old, I’m at a place where I’m happy and content and wearing what feels good to me. If I like what I see in the mirror, I really don’t care what anyone else has to say.
