Zumba, an Old Workout for the New Year

0

‘Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions, setting intentions, choosing a word, or crafting your vision board.  For many of us, getting (more) fit is on the list. I faithfully practice yoga and walk, but this mama needs more cardio and running is not my jam. It’s not the latest fitness craze, but I am digging Zumba right now. Here are a few reasons that I love it and you may too!

Connection

It is actually my husband who brings us to Zumba each week. He has always loved dancing. When we were high school sweethearts, he introduced us to swing dancing. As an adult, during each deployment, Zumba provided stress relief and boosted morale–a needed distraction during an otherwise trying time. Lastly, as the parents of two small kids, many weeks, this is our ONLY “alone” time.

Community

It’s fun to see neighbors and friends at the gym. It’s even more uplifting when a group of “strangers” turns into friends by attending the same class each week. We look out for and celebrate one another. Sometimes we even show up dressed alike!

Joy  (Joy is my word to meditate on this year.)

You can’t take yourself too seriously in Zumba. Every part of it is a little playful and even silly–the moves, the music. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of rage. Instead of throwing tires (which is a perfectly acceptable way to deal with it) I dance it out!

Empowerment

There is something about getting out of my comfort zone that feels terrifying and exhilarating at once. On a really small scale, Zumba does this for me. Being there reminds me of so many times that I was brave, I stretched or grew. It reminds me that I can do hard things and that it’s totally worth it!

I also leave strong, sweaty, sore, and with at least 10,000 steps!

Nostalgia

Zumba reminds me of the “glory days” (The costumes alone were glorious!) of show choir. It’s been many decades since the grapevine, box step, and jazz hands were a part of my daily routine. As Celine would say, though, “It’s all coming back to me now!”

In a more fun way, it reminds me of the racy, carefree nights “in the club” and dancing with every bossy girl I ever loved. A brightly lit, sober, one hour version of it anyway!

Who can do Zumba?

Everybody! Each Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to dance, sweat, and have fun.

What exactly is Zumba?

It is a mix of low-intensity and high-intensity moves delivered in an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. The music is Latin and World rhythms, so you will likely hear and try something new each time.

Why try Zumba?

It is a total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, and flexibility.  I leave each class with a sense of accomplishment and a boost of energy.

When and where can you find a class in Indy:

We have enjoyed classes at our local JCC, and YMCA (because childcare!), but classes are offered all throughout the city.  You can find one here.

Whatever your goals, I wish you health, happiness (and maybe a little dance) in 2020!
