Create a Magical Childhood

1

Sometime last year, a local mom went viral on TikTok for asking what made your childhood magical as a way to help create a magical childhood for your kids. I loved her prompt! And I loved the comments that followed.

I’ve thought about this more than I care to admit, but it made me remember certain magical things in my own childhood. It’s easy to forget magical moments when I’m so far removed from my own childhood, but I want my kids to remember these magical moments, too. I think these magical moments are when we feel extra special–like the main character in our story.

I often find myself so busy with the logistics of motherhood—dropping kids off, making dinner, trying to move us forward—that I forget to stop and help create the magic.

My husband and I are seven years into parenting, and he’s always been so good at creating magical moments for our kids. Even when our kids were babies and toddlers, he’d put records of fun music on so they’d wiggle and dance or give them little foot rubs. Seeing him do these small things has made me aware of small moments where I can try to create a little magic for them.

These moments don’t happen all the time, which I think adds to the magic, but here are a few ways my husband and I create quick moments of magic for our kids.

  1. Bubbles–My husband is so good at remembering to set up the bubble machine when we’re outside playing. We have a little battery-operated one, and he’ll set it in a spot and just let the bubbles go while the kids are running around in the backyard.
  2. Found coins–Our kids get so excited when they find a coin on the ground. I’ve started discreetly dropping a few coins when we’re on a sidewalk or somewhere safe and allowing them to find the coins.
  3. Making rainbows: We have a small disco ball and some suncatcher crystals hanging from multiple windows, so when the sun hits them just right, rainbows appear in the room.
  4. Being cozy–when the kids are sitting and reading or laying down and watching a show, my husband is especially good at making them extra cozy with a fun pillow or blanket.
  5. Celebrate lots of things–we celebrate half birthdays with half of a cake or cupcake, and we celebrate moving into our current house with a number candle. Life is too short not to celebrate as often as we can!

I’m often looking for ways to add to my running list of ways to easily create a magical childhood for our kids, but these have been the ones that come easily and have found a space in our routines.

  1. What a lovely piece! Those little magical moments really make a difference, don’t they? I especially loved the idea of using bubbles and coins to add a little sparkle to everyday life. Quick question: how do you come up with these ideas and keep them fresh over the years? It’s impressive! I’ll definitely be borrowing some of these tips for my family.
