Toddlers and Their Zest for Life

toddlerToddlers have such a zest for life

They really do.

They give zero f*cks about what others think, and they are unapologetically themselves.

My youngest daughter is two and a half years old. She lives with this zest every day. She sees an old pair of shoes that were her sister’s. She wants them. Do they even remotely fit her? No. Does that matter to her? No. She traipses around the house in them, occasionally stumbling but loving the feel and the look of them. The same with her jewelry. She discovered she really loves necklaces and bracelets. At one point she was wearing 6 bracelets on her right arm. She didn’t care if they matched or that her right arm was a bit heavy. She loved them all, and so she kept putting more on.

The toddler zest is unmatched.

Today my daughter screamed at nap time, “I don’t want to sleep! I’m not tired!” She often says she’s full at dinner and then wants a snack an hour later. She has multiple bedtime demands, and we usually give in to at least one of them.

She is relentless. She is headstrong.

She keeps up with her sister, who is six years older than her. She articulates her needs and feelings and already says, “Give me a second” when we ask her to do something (which, of course, mimics something we say to her sometimes).

She wakes up every morning with such a zest for the day. I know that it’s partly her age and partly her personality, but I admire her bravado.

Toddlers have such a zest for life, and I am here for it.
